After looking at my employee TT I realized there was more than one assignment
working out of Sterling. I had actually worked on train 92 and Karl was asking
about the engineer on 94 the train that ran on the Earlville-Sterling sub.
Next time I will open my ETT before I insert my post. Archie

Or was it Ralph Thilbert? It's hard to remember names when you only worked
the job for one weeks vacation. I do remember sleeping in the back room of the
depot. I also remember how well it paid. Seems every time we switched on the
other RRs tracks we were paid 1 hour or actual time at overtime rate. This
could happen several times per shift. The regular crew called them tips. The
job went to work at 3 am and as I recall made a turn at Denrock and returned to
Sterling. In my old timebook we were usually off duty around noon. The
conductor on the job was Mike Tadie who later lost his life right behind the
depot at Denrock. Back to the pay, legend has it that the Sterling job was the
highest paying job on the CB&Q in the 60s. Archie

Ralph Deverage or something like that. I remember he was a big gambler and
carried a roll in his shirt pocket that would choke a horse. I also remember he
fell asleep a couple of times and ran over the derail where the Q came onto the
C&NW as I recall. 42 years can cloud up a mind. Archie
