Same thing happened to the Palmyra, Missouri depot in the fall of
1990. Absolutely nothing wrong with the building at all. No advance
notice. No one had a clue that it was about to happen until a BN
official showed up at city hall, requesting a permit to burn the
remains of the depot. When city officials said that there was
nothing wrong with the depot, the official told them of the planned
demolotion.
City hall called the fire chief, who happened to be a huge CB&Q fan.
He denied the permit request, but the depot was destroyed anyway, the
remains bulldozed into the ground. He was able to save the 'Palmyra'
sign, but that was about it.
Came back to bite the BN three years later when the Mississippi
flooded and everything at West Quincy had to be moved. Instead of a
standing depot, two boxcars were put on the ground to serve as a
signal gang HQ.

on my layout ...
