A post on the LocoNotes group about U28B's on the TTI in Kentucky
reminded me that there are four ex-CB&Q U28B's still running on the
TTI. I knew they had a bunch of ex-Q U28B's, but did not realize that
many were still in service. Apparently there is a fifth unit (ex-Q)
that is used as a parts unit.
I know that it has always been mentioned that "you can't save
everything", but it would seem a shame to not save at least one Q
U-boat. I understand the price of scrap steel is falling, so perhaps
at least the parts unit could be saved. I know at one time some of the
museums along the old Q line were looking for locomotives for static
display. Is anyone possibly interested in a U28B? If so, I will make
some phone calls to see what might be available.
Also, just as another note, two ex-CB&Q SW1000's are on the latest
BNSF auction list. These are running units, so will probably go to an
operator, not scrap. The units are BNSF 3647 (ex-Q 9315) and 3650
(ex-Q 9318).
