The great majority of cars used to load Fruit and
Vegetables have air circulation fans.

Meat cars do not normally have these fans.

Look at the Walthers model: Under the initial/number
and above the left truck as seen from the side it has
a small round plate cast on the carbody. This would
be on the left side of the car. There is also the same
plate on the right side of the car. On both sides of
the car there is also a little bump out at the bottom
of the side sill. This is where the fan's arm would
come down and contact the car wheel so it could turn.

Remove both fan plates and even the bottom of the side
sill on both sides and you have addressed that issue.

There are obviously other issue that come into play if
you wish to use this carbody for various cars but just
that will help a great deal if you are in need of a
"Meat" paint scheme.

Please bear in mind that, for all intents and purposes,
ONLY Sunshine models any Swift car. Swift used a bi-fold
door with both handles facing left. This is such an
obvious flaw and difficult enough to correct and Walthers
has still painted about a zillion cars "Swift".

Also, please keep in mind that all these fancy paint
schemes did not begin to appear until the meat traffic
was virtually gone from the Midwest Railroads. If you
are going to be modeling 1955-1965 all you need to worry
about is shades of yellow or orange. Yeah, the Swift cars
were red or silver but no carbody is available. Some IBPX
cars were painted a very light blue that weathered to a
pinkish cast. Yes, there were MERX, MNX, and possibly
some ART's that had National Packing's map to the right
of the door. This did not change the cars color. National
Packing was in Kansas City and was on the KCS alough the
KCT may have had access to it for the other roads. Agar
also had cars that may have used that very light blue but
when Hygrade bought them those cars were given back to
MDT. I only saw them in storage and am not sure about the
color.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone from Kansas City
could clarify the National Packing access issue.

Let the buyer beware,

Russ

What is the diff. between a Meat and Produce reefer? Except for the
hanging meat racks, I thought all reefers were the same. .......
