The viaduct in Aurora was built with 3 tracks and the idea was to add two more
to the North/West side to handle the traffic.
Once the elevations at both Aurora and Cicero to Chicago were finished it was
planned to elevate La Vergne to DG with 4 tracks and not crossings
The depression and city father's now wanting a great wall thru their towns
stopped the works. Advancements in signal technology put the 4th main out of
business. ie: CTC and cab signals

  Loren,

I concur with that. My late dad, who was a life long Downers Grove
resident, often spoke of the old "fourth" main west of DG. I have
often wondered what possessed them to build it. It would seem that
the heavier traffic would have been east of DG.

In response to an earlier question, prior to around 1965, the south
main was primarily eastbound and the north main was westbound while
the center main was bidirectional. I recall hearing comments that
when they started using the outer mains as bidirectional track, the
ride in the "wrong" direction was considerably rougher than the
  normal direction.
