Steve,

Thanks for the great explanation of what was in those cars of stock. Your
two posts are now inserted into BB #25 for further reference.

I was either on the long train that set out the stock at the Aurora
platforms or was sitting there holding for traffic as I remember it clearly.
One night in '73 I was part of an extra board crew called to go to Big Rock
and bring in an eastbounder dead on the hours of service law. It had stock
on the head end. This was during the Spins/Compass installation and almost all
passing tracks on the east end of the C&I were occupied with trains dead on
the hours of service. We then went on to Cicero, came back to Aurora and went
to Shabbona and brought in another train. That one had reefers for the park.

I also recall setting out stock on the sheep yard lead when in the C&I
pool, spotting stock on yard jobs and especially waiting on Saturday nights
while
on the Aurora 4PM switch engine for the DS to confirm whether any stock was
enroute or not. As soon as he'd verify no stock enroute and the rest of the
work
was done,we'd tie up. That was summer 1974. Looking at the Eola Rdhse engine
assingment book there are yard extras ordered to go to Montgomery for the
day. I recall "Bones" Mathers telling of being called for a sheep yard extra to
 unload 43 cars of sheep.
I would agree with you that the last stock moved around '75 or so. I'm sure
there was a tariff cancellation notice but of course us grunts wouldn't know
about such things. I do recall stock being unloaded, fed and watered at
Savanna. One of the last times I handled stock was spotting a couple carloads
at
Milledgeville.

Leo Phillipp
