If you look at the crew situation from a Dispatcher standpoint the Chief
Dispatcher would handle the crews. Working the Chief's Job you would try and
get Northtown and or Galesburg to give you some kind of figure of what they
were going to run. Cicero was generally cut and dried what they would run. SO
then you sat down and tried to figure out how many crews you needed. At the
same time you were trying to figure out if the southbound trains out of
Northtown had enough power to make it over Burke and or Shabbona Hills on the
C&I. The C&I(Aurora to Savanna((CTC))) was a roller coaster route while the
Peavine(Galesburg to Savanna) was generally flat Savanna to Barstow then rolled
good pretty good with the ruling grade both ways into Alpha.
All this while answering the phone and any questions from the Trick
Dispatchers. Often the calls were from train crews wanting to get home and
sometimes even the train master would get into the crew mix.
One nite a train master called the Chief and told him he had too many crews in
Savanna and to deadhead two home to La Crosse. The Chief working had already
figured out how many crews he needed in Savanna so being a good employee he
obeyed and called the caller in Savanna and Deadheaded two crews home. Then he
called the Caller in La Crosse and deadheaded two crews south to Savanna to
cover the northbound trains. Nothing was ever heard from the Trainmaster again
on crews.

Subject: [CBQ] Step off
In times gone by we've talked about the "step off'" at Aurora depot for the
"Northern and Mainline
Passenger pool trainmen" . This was codified in the local agreements as ok.
There was another step off at Aurora in the frt. pool that was a very
discreet
operation. Crews would head east out of Savanna in the middle of the night
and talk to each other in Savanna yard office and say" if we pass Aurora
Depot
before 'x' ......... This would occur on Sat. and Sunday morning when the
first westbound dinky left CUS an hour later than the rest of the week and
then ran on a two hour gap the rest of the day.
What do you suppose the plan was ? Hint, it was very close to something
that's authorized today in the rules and work agreements but back then it was
frowned upon.
