  I had the unpleasant opportunity to experience "blowoff" once. I grew up in 
Chicago not to far from the C&NW's north main line(s). I was walking home from 
the YMCA and was up on the right away. I was crossing a viaduct and was getting 
close to the north end when I heard a train behind me. I stepped off on to the 
abutment when the engine passed, the engineer opened the "blowoff" and gave be 
a good dose of steam. That taught me a lesson.
  I waked on the sidewalk from then on with the exception of putting pennies on 
the rail.
