The AR&M products are simply first rate. They lay down extremely well
and the grains stay in place and very level during the wetting and
cementing process. I have used a lot of their "N" gauge ballast, both
their 'SP Cinders', and their' GN (BN) Empire Builder'. The former
has slight color variations that can bring this commonly unrelieved
black surface very much to life. The latter also has some very fine
color variations in the same regard, and in fact was to be my choice
for "slag ballast" if the Smith & Sons product had not come along.
That this might have been an OK choice gains credibility when one
learns that this ballast is made from Kaibab stone, a volcanic lava.
A point that needs repeating is that regardless of whether the
ballast is limestone, slag, or granite, it is almost identical once
it is dirty (covered with a rust-brown-gray).
