Leo and list, Let me tell you all about a scheme that was perpetrated by the
switch crew at West Quincy in the early 60's. Not every one was involved in
this scheme, but at least 4 or 5 were. This was during the time period that
soy beans were hauled in box cars with the famous grain doors. The men would
back their pickups up against the car and proceed to punch a few holes in the
grain doors and reap the harvest. Then during their lunch break they would run
over to Quincy and sell the beans to the Moorman Farms. The beans were billed
to Moormans so in essence they were buying their own beans. It wasn't long
before all those involved were sporting brand new trucks. Of course they were
finally caught and we all know the penalty for stealing on the railroad,
automatic dismissal with no chance of ever returning. However, this is where
the story has an unusual twist. Mrs. Moorman, who owned the company, was a
kindhearted fine Christian woman who believed in total and absolute
forgiveness. So after the men had been on the street for about a year, she
called the superintendent and told him it was time they got their jobs back.
He tried to explain that company policy just didn't allow that, but because
her company was such a heavy shipper, the company relented and put them all
back to work. This didn't set well with the 5 men who had transferred up to
West Quincy from Hannibal yard to fill the gap, because the reinstated men went
back on the seniority roster where they originally were. All the men involved
are on the pension now and Moormans is now ADM. I doubt if they would have
been so benevolent. Archie

  Archie,

Indeed every division seemed to have one or two. Ours was similar to yours in
  many ways.
