Lenny,Pete and Jeff can split the prize. A very large spud !
Lenny, thanks for the details on the WFB cars and the shipper and at least
one consignee. Now the rest of the story:As Lenny states the WFB cars had
slopped floors and were unloaded in bulk. Well just like scrap, lumber, etc
anything
unloaded in bulk rarely is totally mty. So at Congress Park,IL where the Q/IHB
had a very active interchange point involving sometimes hundreds of cars a day
there was a shopping bonanza for potatoes. Many, many cars of potatoes went to
the "Harbor" for points east every day and the Mtys returned reverse routed.
The mtys were closely inspected by the car knockers and the "Congo" crews for
left over spuds. The cars were insulated so often the spuds were still fine.
They would get left in the conveyor system, the ice bunkers and on the floor.
Anyone working the Congo had sugar and potatoes at home for a long time. Many
went thru the "Park" headed east.Sometimes the thru frt crews, if stuck in a
siding waiting for an eastbounder, would go "inspecting" while waiting. I once
borrowed some shopping bags from a certain ydmstr who then wanted his cut.
It was SImplot who started shipping frozen french fries in mechanical reefers
