Bill, What you described is a regular drop. In a dutch drop the engine cuts
away and runs ahead of the car to a switch that is opposite of a facing point
one. After going by the switch the engine stops, the switch is opened, and the
engine backs into the clear and then closes the switch allowing the following
car to roll by the switch and now the car is in front of the engine. It is a
much more difficult move and requires more speed, longer distance, and most of
all good judgement, timing, and teamwork. This reversing position of the car
from behind to ahead of the engine was more often accomplished with a routine
runaround. I can count on one hand the number of times we performed a "Dutch
Drop" in my 40 year career. Archie

swtich.that the engine has to uncouple from the car while moving to clear the
switch and the switch is thrown to aloow the call to roll in on the siding

This may not be EXACTLY a runaway but, in an effort to keep the
current thread alive, the mention of a "Durch Drop" was made. Leo and
R (no MI) Campbell stay outta this one for a while please.
Can anyone explain the actual mechanics of a real Dutch Drop?

  Karl
