The Q did have some Pullman Standard -built Dining Cars, but they were built to
ACF plans (!!!!) and were "Burlington Pattern".
They were Lot 4781 Plan 3954, and were numbered CBQ 188-193. It is not
certain if they were owned by the CB&Q or leased
to the Q by Pullman.....these cars (and maybe others) were used in the
wintertime on ACL and other Florida trains. One of them
ended up on the Eastwind for one or two seasons but was not repainted to match
the train. They were eventually sold with
188-190 went to the KCS 5/29 (Nick Muff drawings of one of the cars as
modernized on the KCS appeared in Mainline Modeler) and
191-193 went to the ACL on 3/37. All the cars must not have been needed on the
Q with the first three being released so early; the
second three could have been replaced with the first Budd lightweights which
reused the some of the numbers (190 Silver Pheasant, 191
Silver Inn, and 192 Silver Spoon). Al Hoffman has been doing some of this
research and the Pullman Library at IRM has some drawings
for Lot 4781.
The practice of leasing Diners to the ACL, Seaboard, etc.. may have given rise
to the CB&Q "Ribbon Style" Lettering. There is an urban
legend that one car came back from lease lettered "Burlington" in the ACL
lettering and some official liked it.... it somehow looks more
attractive on a standard car than the Zephyr font.

Subject: [CBQ] Walthers Standard Pullman Built Diner
I see from the latest Walthers sales catalog that they have their
"Pullman-Built Heavyweight 36-Seat Diner" lettered for CB&Q on sale for
half price. Seems like a great deal if the car is an accurate model of
a CB&Q car. Obviously, accurate is a subjective term, but what does
anyone know of the similarity of this model to any CB&Q cars? I have a
couple of the Branchline Pullman cars that do have Q prototypes, but
none of the Walthers heavyweight cars, which past discussions within
this group have indicated are not quite up to the quality of the
Branchline cars (among other things, I believe the Walthers windows were
said to be quite thick). If anyone has both makes of cars, how do they
compare, and is the paint color compatible or do they look odd sitting
side by side?
Thanks,
Scott Myers
