John
Just having a more detailed look at these early roofed cars.
In 1959, 26 GM-4A's were fitted with a removable sectional roof, and
reclassed as GM-4C. The cars were 82297, 82342/58, 82471/81, 82508/71,
82627, 82895, 83006/77, 83105-09, 83112, 83115-20, 83125/28/29 - the numbers
come from the ORER's and are confirmed in the BN Diagram Book.
According to the 1960's Diagram Book, 25 cars ex GM-4A had bulkheads and
wood floor added, sides & ends raised 14", although the difference in
internal height as shown in the actual diagrams is 12" (3' 6" v 4' 6"). The
extra 2 inches comes from the additional thickness of the floor.
In this same period 83140-83249 (GM-4B and GM-4D), which were built with the
4' 6" IH, were also fitted with a
removable sectional roof, and the GM-4F's 83250-99 were built in 1962 with
them.
There are minor differences in dimensions between the different classes -
let me know if you want more.
