What you are describing was the typical arrangement.  Actually, often the FP7 A 
units ran with F3B's.  That is why photos of WP F's in ABA formation are 
unusual.  I believe I have seen two such photos.  One is in Karl Zimmerman's 
book, The California Zephyr.  I forgot where I saw the other.
   
  Interestingly, Emery Goulash's California Zephyr Video (Green Frog) shows Rio 
Grande F's in an ABBB formation, which was also unusual.  The lead F7 unit was 
5574 and, interestingly, it has F3 shrouds, also unusual.
