Council examines depot study

A local architectural firm has proposed a $17,260 feasibility study on the
Burlington depot that would determine what it would cost to renovate the
building.
City Council members discussed a proposed resolution at its work session Monday
to have Metzger Johnson perform the feasibility study.
City Manager Bruce Slagle said that, should the council approve the resolution
during a regular meeting next week, Metzger Johnson will check mechanical,
electrical and architectural components of the city-owned depot.
"This is probably something we really have to do no matter what ... because
we've had several opportunities to maybe occupy that but they kind of fell
through because we didn't have this kind of information," said Mayor Pro Tem
Bill Ell, who led the meeting because Mayor Mike Edwards was ill. "Is that
true?"
"Quite frankly, I think that's what's been lacking is not knowing the exact
costs (to renovate the depot)," Slagle said. "I mean, we've had people put
stuff together before, which has really been kind of in-house estimates, or
guesstimates or whatever. But this is really going to lay it down as far as
from an architectural point of view, as far as really what's it going to cost
to bring that building back."
Brian Tapp, executive director of the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning
Commission, is interested in more space and believes a renovated depot would be
an ideal place to relocate since it recently added a transit service to its
list of responsibilities. SEIRPC now is housed in Burlington Memorial
Auditorium.
Although the city would have to pay part of the renovation, Tapp said SEIRPC
would seek state and federal grants.
