A new book, The Pioneer Zephyr, produced under the auspices of Chicago's Museum
of Science and Industry, tells the story of this train from inception in the
early '30s to restoration in the late '90s for indoor display in the Museum's
Great Hall. Numerous illustrations and a wealth of detailed information came
from the Museum's extensive Pioneer Zephyr archives.
The Pioneer Zephyr is a 124-page 81/2 x 11" perfectbound volume with laminated
color covers, containing 164 photographs and illustrations. Text is by noted
railroad writer Carl R. Byron, with Robert W. Rediske (the last known person
alive who rode the Zephyr on its historic dawn-to-dusk run).
This new book is published by Heimburger House, 7236 West Madison, Forest Park,
IL 60130 and is available direct for $18.95 plus $4 postage (Illinois residents
add 8.25% sales tax). The Pioneer Zephyr is also available from the Museum of
Science and Industry at the Museum's Gift Shop, on their website, or by mail.
If you are looking for a solid, well written history of the genesis of the
Zephyr fleet, this might just be the book for you.
I am offering this only as information to CB&Q historians and modelers. I am
not a dealer, nor do I have a commercial interest in this book. Thanks
Philip A. Weibler
