Doesn't the RTR supply just plain look better and have bigger variety
than it used to?

I figure it's a result of two things.  First, the increase in overseas
manufacturing (especially in China) makes the RTR products cheaper to
make, therefore profitable.  Second, advances in plastics/paints, and
improved manufacturing tolerances, have allowed better looking models
out of the box.
