Jerry,

I think it is sort of like a real RR. You pick and choose what you can
do. Not every RR built their own locomotives, freight cars and track
structure. In modeling eye sight certainly can be an issue. I know mine
isn't what it used to be, now at 62. In fact, I used to scoff at those
magnifying visors, but I keep one handy now days which I inherited from
my dad. There is another issue for me and that is that as I get older,
I realized that my time is rapidly diminishing. I have to cut corners
somewhere if I want to have even a satisfactory RR in my life time. My
focus tends to be on locomotives and so, I plan time to work on them.
Even at that, I have purchased some RTR high quality locomotive models.
While I work in O scale which helps some of the age related problems,
there is a tendency to do more in terms of details because you can.
Somewhere, most of us finally realize that we have to "draw a line" and
I choose to do that with locomotive detail and overall appearance of
the RR. RTR cars give my locomotives a reasonably good looking train to
pull.
