Leo,
This from Jim Miller, former pres. of the BRHS, Good friend and a guy that gets
his modeling done instead of reading 236 unanswered emails from his Yahoo

PALLEEEZZEE don't paint it silver !
Sent this to Leo:
"Leo,
The Q "painted" their smokeboxes and fireboxes a graphite and oil mixture
because that was the only mixture that would hold up to the high temperatures
of those spots. This appeared to be a very dark grey in color. For a touch up,
the graphite and oil mixture could easily be sprayed by any shop crew and did
not require returning to the main shops for a total repaint.
The use of silver was a modern adaptation used primarily in the rail fan days
to "dress up" the engines. This was not "standard" practice.
I would urge you to consider the "graphite and oil" color for the repainting of
your engine."

Subject: [CBQ] Open invite
We are about to begin painting the 4978 at the Mendota museum, exact
date to be set, in the mean time the cab windows are being rebuilt, now
to the invite part, we are in need of volenteers, for this job, also
need someone in the know as to the right shade for the smoke box, we
have picked a paint chip that looks to be close, it nearly got a dark
charcoal color, but I thinkI got that stopped, a non modeler, had seen
a photo that showed a dark color, but by going thru a book by Mr.
Corbin, and showing this individual several photos of the silver coled
locos, convinced him to change his mind. We usually congegate up there
on Wednesday afternoons and on Sat.s as well, I can't get back b4 next
Wed. afternoon, so if any of you would have a couple of hours of time,
we usually go to beans across the track to Main Street Tap in the
evening, we could use some one or two or more that know what we should
be doing. Thanks Leo McCauley McNabb, Il.
