I'll see if I can examine the photo this was scanned from with a 
magnifying glass; from the scan it looks like x1998.

That would be Macomb & Western Illinois #2, a "Robertson" semi-
convertible built by St. Louis Car Company in early 1904.  The M&WI was 
conceived as an electric line so this and one other car were designed 
as electrics, they were just never given motors and controls since the 
M&WI didn't have enough money to actually electrify.
