Denny and Others:
Until recently, I would have only been able to suggest an answer,
but I was present at a slide showing and viewed two scenes a
year or so apart providiing the proof.
Both slides were taken in Denver of a venerable Q S-2 (the Alco
diesel switcher, not the steam locomotive) shoving the CZ
consist to the platform. The road engines had been removed
and the train washed.
Coupled between the engine and CZ baggage car were two or
three green head end cars. I did not take notes as to which cars,
but will obtain the information.and post it soon.
I believe that these cars represent the Lincoln and Alliance mail
cars. My logic is that the cars were placed between the road
power and baggage car the CZ consist was unbroken, and early
rising passengers in the obs would not notice the additional
cars.
I recall reading correspondence at the Newberry between Mr.
Murphy and his peers at DRG&W and WP. Although not pleased
with the option, Mr. Murphy was firm about the decision over the
objections of the other roads. At this time,I do not recall other
details.
Recent Mainline Modeler magazine editorials have alluded to a
certain Zephyr book in process of being published. Lets hope
this happens reasonably quickly, so the details may finally
surface.
Best Regards,
Ed DeRouin
