Everyone thinks that being a banker is an easy job. I've worked at home
all day today and yesterday. Tomorrow is a bank holiday but, again I will
be working from home. To provide good service, I have to be available 24
hours a day and 7 days a week. Many of my clients and all of my referral
sources have my cell phone number and they do call me at all hours of the
day and night. If I don't answer and/or respond, they'll find someone else
to take their business to. I am happy to be in this business and love to
be busy. It means that I am providing for my family.

My dad was a fireman and engineer for the CB&Q and my mother said he loved
his job. Unfortunately, he passed away two weeks after my fourth birthday
at the age of 39.

Many people complain about their jobs and I learned a long time ago that no
job is perfect. They all have their good and bad points.

I hope my friend, Bill Jelinek will respond to this email as he left the
business world later in life and went to work for the Wisconsin Central out
of Superior. He is now an engineer. I believe his insight could prove to
be very educational and enlightening.

I've got 34 yrs. as an engineer, and I can tell you that you won't have a
life of your own anymore. Railroading is a military type atmosphere. You
sound like you may be older so the change in lifestyle may not agree. The
spare boards and the road for years take their toll on both you and your
family while working around the clock. I spent 20 years on spare boards and
the road. The pay is pretty good but not as good as it should be for what
you give up and have to go thru and the responsabilities you have. And of
course there are the dangers of the job as has been publicised by recent
accidents. Pay was better years ago before we gave up a lot. Most companys
have decent benefits. If I had it to do over again, I'd get a nice quiet
job
in a bank like my dad!
