The earliest this started that I know was Dec 1957 using leased NP sleepers.
They were painted in the IC brown and orange with PULLMAN on the letterboard.
Small N.P. was on each end on the car. I went to Bradenton, FL in Dec 1957 and
returned on the City of Miami. I heard from the porter that dome cars were
being used. When the Tampa and Miami sections met up at Jacksonville, there
was a dome car in IC livery. The forward windows were not blacked out at this
time. And I think the IC had only leased one car at this time to see how well
it was received. In later years they leased four or five cars for the winter
season since they weren't needed on the North Coast. Enough to cover each City
of Miami trainset (2), remember it ran every other day, and each Panama Limited
trainset (2). There is an IC Annual Report that has a picture of a dome on the
cover. I forget the year.

Yes, NP dome-coaches were on IC's City of Miami during the winter season. I
rode the City Chicago to Jacksonville around February 1970. Unfortunately,
southern Illinois is not noted for scenery, and while IC's intentions may
have
been good, painting the front windows black (or plating them over, or
whatever)
was not passenger friendly. The cars looked great in IC colors; you just
could not see forward out the front windows. The IC always leased cars off
season from other railroads to match their on-season. The owning road always
received the cars back in their own color schemes. Good deal, that! Jim
