The C&NW was, if anything, CHEAPER than the CB&Q (which is why it was called
the Cheap and Nothing Wasted).
The B units that were rebuilt into As (the "Crandel" sp? cabs) were ex-UP
units purchased at bargin prices for the purpose.
Don't forget that the Q did the opposite...convertiing shovelnoses 9904-9907
into "Zephyr Boosters".
But you are on target with the Q's recognition of the flexiblity of having
interchangeable units in the pool. I wonder if the Q and passenger service
had lasted longer if the E7s would have been rebuilt to E9 specs to allow
them to be fully integrated into the pool as well?
