Tom Mack:
The only spot where another railroad crossed over the Burlington
between Aurora and Savanna was at Polo, where the IC's Freeport to Cairo Line
crossed over the Q. This was not an interchange point, and basically was out
in
the country. This track has been pulled up.
Milwaukee Road shared track from Flagg Center to Steward at grade,
and the C&NW crossed at grade at Rochelle. None of these had interchange, if
memory serves. The Milwaukee's connection in Savanna was not designed for
interchange, and the crossing is at grade..
For scenic spots, there's the "sand" cut east of Oregon, and the cut
where the mainline parallels White Pines State Park west of Oregon. West of
Chadwick, the Milwaukee and Burlington's mainlines are within sight of each
other to Savanna. There is a North Western crossing at grade at Mored passing
track somewhere near Hinckley, if I recall correctly; perhaps it's closer to
Waterman. There was another crossing, long gone, called the Ashdale Cutoff
where
the Milwaukee's Southwest Line bypassed Savanna and went under the Burlington
along a creek bed. This was torn up in the mid-1940's (1947?).
There's plenty of scenery on this line, but nothing that fits your
plan. It's still an interesting part of the C&I, with plenty of up hill down
hill running through the rolling hills of northwest Illinois.
