Dale,
The color varied depending on how long the it had been since the
locomotive or the roof was painted. If the locomotive is fresh from a
shopping, the cab roof color would be much more visible. During the
late fantrip era, the Q even painted some locomotive cab roofs Chinese
Red, including #641 which was the last steam locomotive assigned to
regular service on the C&S Climax, CO. branch.
So, depending on your "story" or era, the cab roofs don't have to
exactly match. It is sort of like weathering on a model. Weathering
shouldn't all be the same and to the same degree.
