I used to watch the Zephyr Rocket blast by our house during the early to mid
1960's. I watched the northbound ZR out of St. Louis between West Alton and
Old Monroe during most of my early teen years. The southbound was harder to
catch due to the early arrival time in St. Louis.
On most days, the ZR would be composed of a single E7, 3-4 headend cars and
a couple coaches. The Q and Rock Island each provided one loco and one or
two coaches plus whatever headend equipment was needed. The trainsets would
rotate on an every other day cycle. The train followed the Mississippi
River valley from Burlington IA south, thus a single E unit was sufficient.
The Qs passenger equipment would be mostly heavyweight head end cars and
heavyweight coaches. As I recall, most were pullman green. The RI provided
stainless steel coaches and silver painted heavyweight baggage cars.
Occasionally, a boiler equipped Geep would be used as power. I remember an
E8 on occasion, too. I recall seeing foreign road cars on occasion and
observed a dome car on one occasion.
