A couple more comments about the signal aspects. It was mentioned in one post
that the lower (not the middle) target governs movement onto a siding or some
special indication for the specific location.

One special application was for sidings at interlockings (an example is the EB
signals at Earlville on the 4 track signal bridge, signals for the mains are
high upper and middle targets, while the siding targets are low).

Another example of the use of the lower (third) target was in the suburban
territory before all main tracks were made bi-directional. Although the third
targets were used extensively to govern movements into yard trackage, they were
also used at many locations (some examples Downers Grove EB, West Hinsdale WB
Main 3, Highlands EB Main 1, Congress Park WB Mains 1 and 3) to govern main to
main movements against the current, i.e Main One Eastward or Main Three
Westward.

Another comment on the use of the lunar is that it didn't necessarily mean that
you were entering a non-signaled track. Between Chicago and Galesburg (and
perhaps other locations) lunars were used (with red) at interlockings to
display permissive aspects for main to main movements. This allowed suburban
(and other) trains to move on close headways by allowing a following train to
proceed into an occupied block at a control point. Although the rules required
the train to proceed at restricted speed through the entire block, this was
rarely required in cab signal territory where the ACS would pick up if the
train ahead was moving faster.
