Passenger car buffs:

Silver Maple was apparently a 16 section sleeping car built for the
California Zephyr, delivered in October or November 1948 and numbered
#400.

Would this car have ever been used in service on other (lower priority)
trains, especially prior to it's conversion to a chair car?

For what it's worth, David Randall in his book The Passenger Car Library
Vol. 1 - CB&Q says this about the Silver Maple and its counterparts,
"All Section Sleeping cars were rare in the postwar era. The three
railroads involved in operating the California Zephyr felt that there was
still a market for the upper and lower berth. Actualy the cars lasted
until the mid 1960s when they were converted to 48-seat coaches."

The car was rebuilt in 1963 to chair car configuration and numbered
#4742. My information suggests it's currently owned by the St. Louis
Chapter NRHS, stored at the St. Louis Museum of Transportation, and
undergoing restoration.

Thanks for any info.!, Don
