The question has been asked, "what was the real tie between the Rock and the
Burlington." It could have been John D. Farrington, who came off Burlington's
Fort Worth & Denver as general manager to become Rock Island chief operating
officer.
He saved the Rock Island by rebuilding it from the ground up,
dieseling, streamlining it. Possibly one of the best railroad president of all
time.
His successors didn't do as well as he did.
