While the 1936 DZ cars were running as the Texas Zephyr, the
equipments partial articulation, the dependence on head-end delivery
for electricity, and the unique automatic coupling system that
included automatic coupling of brakes, steamlines, etc. prevented the
inclusion of standard equipment in the consists, other that at the
head of the train.
However, because of age and resultant maintenance issues, the 36 DZ
equipment was retired from TZ service and stored as two trainsets in
the Q's Denver Passenger Yard just northeast of the 23rd street
viaduct. Thus, midday, you could see two 36 DZ's and one 56 DZ,
observation cars of all three facing you, at one time.
After the DZ equipment was retired, the TZ used its old 1940
streamlined equipment along with pool sleepers from a number of
different railroads, including the Q. This is well documented in
Steve A Goen, Fort Worth and Denver Color Pictorial (La Mirada, CA:
Four Ways West Publications, 1996) pp. 78, 86, 96. Also in Ronald C.
Hill, Colorful Colorado Railroads in the 1960's (Golden, CO: Colorado
Railroad Historical Foundation, 1992), p.18, what looks like a 1956
DZ 10-6 sleeper can be seen in the TZ consist of December of 1966.
