James,

The Aurora Passenger switcher during most of the 60's
was CB&Q 9153, a SW1. It became BN 97 and was later
used as a yard engine at Cicero, Dubuque, North La Crosse,
and Winona. Sold to Independent Locomotive Service it
has been at Bottineau Farmer's Elevator at Bottineau ND
for many years.

Other than having a radio there was nothing "special"
about that unit. It just happened to be the one that
was used as the primary switch engine at the depot and
Hill Yard.

Even in the current day these things happen. The
roadswitcher at Crete NE has been BN/BNSF 2160 for at
least the last 5 years.

If the local personnel are satisfied with a unit in
the role it is assigned to the local management will
usually go to some effort to keep it.

Russ

  Hi James,

The BRHS Archives does not have the specific information you request about
the Aurora switcher, so I've forwarded your email to the CBQ list, where we
have over 700 CB&Q fans "listening in" who may be able to answer that
  question.

The Denver Zephyr of the 60's had a "fixed" consist that was amplified
during peak seasons. The consist was:

  Baggage-RPO
  Baggage
  (2) 50-seat coach
  Vista Dome Coach
  Vista Dome Dormitory Buffet Lounge
  (2) Slumbercoaches
  48-seat Diner
  (3) 10-6 Sleeper
  6-5 Sleeper
  Vista Dome Observation Lounge

  Subject: Two Questions

  Need some help:

FIRST, Growing up in Aurora during the 60's, I would often pick my dad up
from the Aurora station. (He worked for the "Q".) It seemed to me that there
was always a switcher there to move the suburban cars around.

What type of switcher was it, and was one specially assigned to that duty,
If so, does anyone know the number of the switch engine???

Second, did the Denver Zephyr of the 60's of a fixed consist (like that of
the CZ), and if so, what was the order of the cars???

  Thanks for answering these questions.

  James E Schwarz
