Hi,

You will find a complete set of Paint & Lettering Diagrams in the
Waycars book for the NE-12s and NE-13s.

According to the Company P&L drawings:

1. The metal was prepared with DuPont Metal Primer #63-008. I would
believe that this was actually a metal prep coating and not a paint
finish. I haven't looked it up on the DuPont database to see if my
assumption is correct.

2. The primer was DuPont Duco Sealer Surfacer Grey #233-9608.

3. The waycars were painted with DuPont Duco Aluminum Lacquer
#254-4202. But keep in mind that many of the ingredients used in the
paint in 1960's have long since been removed by the EPA and OSHA. But
you will be very, very close.

Anyone can go into a DuPont commercial paint outlet and they can tell
you, and usually, mix a quart (or 500 gallons) for you of any of these
paints or any other railroad color if you have the number.

Marshall is right about dates and repaints. I have not researched
whether or not there were any NE12s delivered without stripes and/or
scotchlite end panels. I hurriedly looked at 100+ NE12 photos to
answer this
question and from what I saw I am not inclined to believe that there
were any delivered without stripes and end panels.

There were NE13s delivered without stripes that had Scotchlite end
panels.

But the first rule at the railroad is that the railroad can do
anything they want on any given day and they did so religiously.

And to keep things stirred, there were 2 typefaces used for the NE12s'
numbers. So if you want to be correct you have to work off a photo to
see which typeface was used.

Regards,
Randy Danniel
