The original gearing on the oriental Limited diesels and all others made by
Samhongsa were made of a plastic that lost its plastizer over the years some
what depending on the use and wear, temp etc. This caused the gears to
shrink and thus split. North west short line has the replacement gears which
do not split. Proto 2000 is also having trouble with the axle gears
splitting and the cure is to buy replacement gears from Athearn as the drive
is a Chinese knock off of the Athearn mechanism. Does your engine have split
gears at the present? If you feel that you need some one to check out the
gearing and replace gears I can help. I do mechanism work which includes a
complete disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, replacement of defective
gearing, lubrication and reassembly. Bob Schafer Bob's Engine House

Bob:

The only reason I guess is because I was under the impression that the
gearing was short-lived in the Samhongsa engine. But if they can be made
more reliable I would try to do that instead. Is there anything specific
that makes them more reliable, such as all brass gears?

Why would you want to do that? The mechinism in the Oriental / Samhongsa
engine is sound and with a little work it will be as good or better than the
rest. Bob Schafer
