The only reason I guess is because I was under the impression that the gearing
was short-lived in the Samhongsa engine. But if they can be made more reliable
I would try to do that instead. Is there anything specific that makes them more
reliable, such as all brass gears?

Why would you want to do that? The mechinism in the Oriental / Samhongsa
engine is sound and with a little work it will be as good or better than the
