Can anyone shed some light on a coal derived diesel fuel project? Any
one know of the National Geographic referenced (see below)? Jim
Mishcke over on the loconotes list is looking for some information on
the B&O's involvement in the project. Was it actually the Q or a
different road?

CB&Q was running an E-6 (5?) on coal derived diesel fuel as early as

There was a picture of it in National Geographic back then

Sounds like something quite interesting...
For reference, Jim's original comments:
Over on the B&O list, one of our members talked with an old
Benwood (Wheeling) roundhouse foreman who recalled a coal
derivative fuel testing program on the B&O between 1952 and
1956. It involved two sets of F-units in captive service
between Punxsutawney and Wheeling, and two types of diesel fuel,
dispensed from tank cars at Glenwood (Pittsburgh). He also
remembered something involving a firm in Washington state.
Thanks!
