Mike, I have seen it referred to as Budd Block Lettering. (Budd...the company that constructed lightweight stainless steel passenger cars). It was used on Burlington, Rock Island, and Florida East Coast lightweight passenger equipment. This would include the 1941 D&RGW "Prospector", and cars for the California Zephyr ( owned by D&RGW, WP, PRR). I can't help with the typeface term, or who created it. Good luck in your research!
