I remember the term "Dinky" being attributed to the special 0-6-2 Tank
engines built for commuter service. They were small engines (without
tenders) and the name applied to them got generalized to all suburban
trains.
On a related subject, does anyone have any information on the location of
the Lyons station c.1861-1869? I seem to remember trying to calculate its
position by using mileages from stations that did not move too much (since
the Chicago terminal did move two times) and placing the original Lyons
station on the west side of the DesPlaines River about the location of First
Avenue. The Riverside Historical Society has an Omstead plat map showing a
brick station in the middle of a passing siding, with two mains to the
north, all merging to a single main across the river at about the same
location as the present station. They have no record of the turntable and
engine house at Riverside.
