Ken,

Got to lighten this discussion up a little. Actual conversation
on a Dispatcher's line. Nothing made up.

For quite a while the Panhandle was using FM's on transfers
in the Chicago area. Lots of smoke but they would keep on
pulling. At Western Avenue they would have to cross over
from their Westward track and go up the wye to get to the
elevated "Q". a hard pull but not very long. Phone box
was a little ways from where they had to stop and they could
not cross over until they had confirmed that the "Q" would
take them.

Head Brakeman: "Panhandle at Western Ave. with the XXXX
and XXX cars ready to come up."
Dispatcher: "What is the number of your second unit?"
Long silence, then Brakeman: "We only have one unit."
Dispatcher: "I didn't ask you how many units you had, I asked
you the number of your second unit!"
An even longer silence, then Brakeman: "Engineer says we only
have one unit and that's all."
Dispatcher: "Well alright, come on up."

That's real life on the Railroad and I would not be surprised
if someone could even name the Dispatcher.
