Mike/Dustin,

Mike is correct that during the period mentioned #85/86 and the Fox River
were powered by TR2's.

I can't really say what was used Rock Falls to Earlville. For some reason I
think that local was actually run out of Rock Falls.

As far as Barstow is concerned it was a little different. The track condition
Mendota to Denrock was much better, that is why it was still used for
under-powered and over-tonnage trains right through the 70's. It did
reach the point that #88 was more likely to go that way than via Oregon.
At least into early '52 they were still trying to run through service to
Barstow. I do not know if these trains actually originated at Cicero or
Eola but they did have a scheduled #69/64 that went to Barstow.
During the '50 to early '52 period this train was still handled by steam,
normally a S4A but also by O5A's. It could very well be that when this
operation was either discontinued or dieselized that they went with TR2's.

I noticed at the time that those "Information Only" freight schedules in the
timetable didn't get updated very often. There were sometimes trains that
did not run on any regular basis or the times shown were not even close
to the normal operation. Must have been some communication failures
between the Marketing and Operating Departments.

Dustin: I have some data for you. Beginning in the early 1950s and up
until the summer of 1954, the Q ran "cow and calf" TR-2s on the way
freights to Streator and to Barstow. They may have run them to Rock
Falls as well. The railroad began using GP-7s most of time once they were
delivered in 1952 and 1953. I believe that the Rock Falls switcher was
usually an NW-2. I am pretty sure that the GP-7 was standard during the
1960s. Karl, Leo and some of the guys who worked that line might be able
to tell us more.
