I've noticed in a few books, namely Charles Rudisel's BN
Passenger Cars, and Todd Sullivan's NP Color Guide to
Freight and Passenger Equipment, that the CB&Q and the NP
pooled Slumbercoaches used on the North Coast Limited and
the Denver Zephyr. A Slumbercoach arriving on the DZ would
go out later that day on the NCL, with the inbound NCL
Slumbercoach would go out on the DZ. The question that I
have is considering the fact that the NCL used six sets of
equipment, that would mean that the DZ only required one
Slumbercoach. However, the Official Guide from February
1960 would make you think that two Slumbercoaches were used
on the DZ at the time. The car number/line number for the
Chicago to Colorado Springs car is given as CS-7, while the
Chicago to Denver car is given as CS-8. Were two cars used,
or were separate numbers used for the reservations?
Was the pool continued after the additional eight
Slumbercoaches were purchased for the Mainstreeter in 1964?
The Q would purchase two of these cars, the 335 and the 336
in 1965 from the NP. I would think that the Q would have
wanted to continue the pool if they were only used two of
their four cars purchased for the DZ. Anyone on the list
have a definitive answer?
Thanks in advance,
Ed Pavlovic
