Pete as I recall the salt when mixed w/the ice served to lower the
temperature in the cars, by speeding up the melting process right?
Understand much fresh fruit moved w/the ventilator fans on and ice hatches
open so as to distribute the cool air in the car and simply keep the load
cool as oppossed to almost frozen.
Further understand that as frozen foods became more common in the 50's there
were many battles between the produce shippers and frozen food producers over
who was going to pay the extra costs of the mech reefers.
Leo
P.S. the only ice reefers I handled were produce cars.By my time all meat was
in mech. reefers. I do remember the heater warning placards during the
winter.But thats another story.
