dad was a freight pool engineer when the 500's (sd-24's) came in 
1959. a remark he made about them at that time, "Those 500's will 
start anything, they'd start the world if there was a way to hook a 
drawbar to it." the conversation about them on the aurora division 
probably did not answer all your questions on how they were used. 
Found a timebook page from 1964. Hope this gives you a brief idea 
how the 500's were worked.

Train - LW68 - power - 931, 511, 502, 505, 901, 902 (there's that 
dreaded `lines west' again)
61 - 126a, 511, 118b, 113a
2/70 - 132dc, 952, 509, 157c
CD - 983, 506, 513
78 - 514, 915

used on main line power, hot shots, etc. In consists with gp20's, 
30's, grey backs, no branch work, no switch engines, no work trains, 
up to that (1964) time, and on up to the merger, and of course no 
passenger. not to say any of this usage did not happen later on.
