Just to let you know that you're not alone - the BRHS calendar has
yet to reach Kansas City.
Maybe if we had sent them all to our member in New Zealand and had
him drop ship them from there.....???? Hmm.....

Patience, patience.

ABSOLUTELY!!
This brings up an interesting question, what was the personallity of
the pre Frisco BN? Which road(S) exerted the most influence and how
long did it last from '71 to '80?
I would think the parent roads NP and GN would have been the ruling
force.

Terry and all,

I don't about the lines west territory, but as for my stomping grounds
of
West Quincy, the Q folks were still very much an influence. Funny how
the
'Northern' aspect never seemed to enter into conversation...it was
always
Burlington.

I remember going to West Quincy once after the Frisco merger took
place. If
you wanted to really p**s somebody off, all you had to do is say the
Frisco
Northern!

Regards,
John Lewis

I recall reading an article in Business Week in the mid 70s satting
that the BN Merger had gone very smoothly, relatively speaking, and
that no predecessor road had exhibited more influence than the other.

I also found it interesting, in Ft Worth, at the BN corporate HQ, not
once did I hear or see and reference to John Budd, Bob McFarlane or
Harry Murphy, the real fathers of the merger, but Lou Menk Drive?
Beam Me Up Scotty! Heresy!

As info (for anyone who hasn't seen the news release or heard the news)
Metra
has announced 300 new cars for commuter service. It is reported 50 of
those
cars will replace the original Q double decks. Get those photos of the

original 700 series double decks in the next couple years!

A loooong time ago in a place far,far ,far away my grandfather(Smitty)
told
his young grandson lots of railroad stories. One of those was about how
one
time the winter was so bad on the Alley Job (neat industrial spur and
connection to the cheap and nothing wasted in Aurora, IL) that the crew
spent
a large part of one day routing steam from the engine to the
flange way
between the rails and the street paving material(bricks, cement or
asphalt
{depending on which part of Middle Ave you were on}) in order to melt
the
buildup of ice so as not to derail the cars being shoved down the alley
(see
prior posts on Alley Job operating scheme). Can anyone explain how this
would
have been done? Leo

Which all goes to prove that bigger is not always better, smaller is
sometimes smarter, and paying extra for airmail pays off in the end.
But when you get your calendar you'll see that the wait was worth it!
