I know that EMD and ALCO, GE, and I suspect Baldwin and others had over
speed sensors that would shut down the prime mover to either idle or set the
brakes, or both, depending on the manufacturer, or set up, often to the
loud bell notifying the offending culprit of the error of his ways. I once
had a rebuilt CP GP-7 on the Davis turn, Bensenville to Davis Jct. (Yeah, I
know it is not the Q) that had a 40 mph over speed. What a pain!!!!!!!
