I believe that most, if not all, tanks have internal structural members that
play a vital role in strengthening the assembly and providing a certain
amount of damping of the product. The viscosity of heated tallow is such
that it presents a good medium for
the transfer of energy. The reaction to the vehicle's velocity change is a
slow wave action that requires a considerable amount of time to complete a
cycle. It can be seen almost every time a tank of high viscosity material
is allowed to couple to a cut of cars in a switching operation (NOT
placarded, Haz Mat product, however). The wave action of the product will
stretch and bunch the slack on 5 or more cars several times before things
settle down.
Weighing long cuts of these cars IS a b_ _ _ _.
