I'm not Gerald, but a tell-tale is an object hung over a track from a horizontal bar, usually something that was not solid such as rope or wood slats, to warn a brakeman that there was low overhead

i went looking for the west portal from the top of the bluff last year trying to find a down on shot of the IC crossing the bridge...didn't find any road, someone's back yard was above the west porta
