One of my pleasures of riding the Vista-dome Denver Zephyr was seeing the 
tell-tales as we traveled along.

I'm not Gerald, but a tell-tale is an object hung over a track from a 
horizontal bar, usually something that was not solid such as rope or wood 
slats, to warn a brakeman that there was low overhead approaching, such as a 
tunnel or bridge.
