There is a lot of misconception about the Edgemont to Deadwood line and its branches. The steepest grades on the mainline (Edgemont to Deadwood) are 3.0%. There are no 4% as often stated. The Keyston

I do not remember what the SW-1 weighed but a good guess might be 105 tons (210,000 lbs). Assuming it could get a 20% adhesion factor that would be 42,000 lbs of traction. Gravity force on a 3% grade
